Balos at a glance

Balos lagoon lies at the tip of the Gramvousa peninsula in north-west Crete, 56 km north-west of Chania and 17 km north-west of Kissamos (Visit Chania, the official tourism portal of Chania). Balos is a shallow turquoise lagoon with white and pink sand and is part of the Natura protected-area network (Visit Chania). There are two ways in: a 10 km dirt track from the village of Kaliviani to a car park above the lagoon, or a day boat from Kissamos port.

For a hire car, the dirt track is the whole question. Several Crete rental firms ban it in their contracts and charge a fixed penalty, and on those roads their insurance stops applying. Takeaway: decide between the Balos track and the Balos boat when you book the car, not when you reach Kaliviani.

Driving to Balos: the 10 km dirt track

The road to Balos leaves the northern road at Kaliviani, just west of Kissamos, and turns into a dirt track. According to Visit Chania, after 10 km the track reaches a large car park with a canteen high above the lagoon; from there a path leads down to Balos in about 15 minutes on foot, and the walk back up is a steady climb in full sun. The Municipality of Kissamos collected a usage fee in the Gramvousa and Balos area in the 2026 season, but we found no published rate for cars.

Asphalt distances and times are our own OSRM route check (OpenStreetMap road network) of 2 November 2026; the dirt-track length is from Visit Chania. By road that makes about 50 km from Chania old town to the Balos car park. Takeaway: from Chania, Balos is about an hour's drive to the track and then a slow dirt road; from Heraklion it is a full day out.

Takeaway: a couple pays about €82 for the Balos and Gramvousa boat outside the peak, with no risk to the hire-car deposit.

Car or boat: which to choose

  • Choose the boat if your rental contract bans the Balos road, if you want to see Gramvousa too, or if you are travelling with small children.
  • Choose the track only if your rental firm allows it in writing, and go early: the car park is above the lagoon and the climb back is in full sun.
  • Outside the boat season (after 31 October), the track (or a long hike) is the only way in, so the insurance question matters even more.

Balos pairs well with Falasarna beach on the same day, and with Elafonisi on the next. For the drive from the airport, see our Chania airport guide; for the road rules, see driving in Crete.
